Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said President Bola Tinubu is not Nigeria’s biggest political challenge. Speaking at a conference, Amaechi argued that the real issue is the weakness of opposition parties. He maintained that meaningful change will only happen when the opposition becomes strong and united.
Amaechi stressed that opposition leaders must clearly separate themselves from the ruling government. According to him, Nigerians will only trust alternative parties when they see a clear difference in policies and direction. He urged political actors to focus on rebuilding credibility ahead of 2027.
Reflecting on his time under former President Muhammadu Buhari, Amaechi claimed that an electoral reform bill was once stalled. He alleged that some ministers discouraged Buhari from signing it, warning of possible foreign interference. He noted that some of those individuals are now calling for reforms.
Amaechi also said Tinubu’s political strength lies in the weakness of his rivals. He suggested that until the opposition proves it can challenge power effectively, the current administration will remain confident. Leaders from different opposition parties attended the joint press briefing.
