NYSC Expels 54 Fake Corps Members, Including Bread Seller, from University of Calabar

In a recent development, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expelled 54 individuals, including a bread seller, who were falsely enrolled as graduates from the University of Calabar (UNICAL) for the national service program.

The expulsion was announced by NYSC’s Director-General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, in a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Eddy Megwa. This expulsion follows the discovery that these individuals were not actually qualified to participate in the program.

In addition to these expulsions, 19 other people who tried to register online for the NYSC program were blocked from doing so. Furthermore, four certificates of national service were withheld due to issues related to irregularities. This comes on the heels of the NYSC voiding 101 certificates in an earlier crackdown, bringing the total number of fake or irregular certificates to 178.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL, Professor Florence Obi, was commended by the NYSC for bringing the issue of fake corps members to light. This situation highlights the ongoing issue of fraudulent mobilization into the national service program, which the NYSC is working hard to combat.

Brigadier General Ahmed assured that the NYSC will continue collaborating with heads of corps-producing institutions and other stakeholders to prevent future occurrences of illegal mobilization. He also advised employers to carefully verify the national service certificates presented by job applicants to ensure they are genuine and not fraudulent.

The statement by Ahmed , “The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar came here to report that she observed some names appeared on the institution’s list that ought not to have been there.

“I give kudos to the Vice-Chancellor. Previously, a bread seller was mobilized on the graduation list from the same institution.

“There are bad eggs in many places that generate matriculation numbers and courses for their candidates.

“Those who are responsible for inputting the data of graduates should be people of integrity.”

This development reflects the NYSC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the national service program and ensuring that only qualified individuals are allowed to serve.
