Electoral Act: CNPP, Kukah Centre, Yiaga Africa, ADC, others knock Tinubu

Several groups, including the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, the Kukah Centre, Yiaga Africa, and the African Democratic Congress, have criticized President Bola Tinubu over the newly signed Electoral Act. They argued that some provisions may weaken transparency and public trust in elections.

The groups said retaining manual collation as a backup to electronic transmission could open loopholes for manipulation. According to them, reforms should focus on strengthening technology and removing processes that might allow interference.

They also warned that public confidence in elections depends on clear, reliable, and tamper-proof procedures. Civil society leaders stressed that electoral laws should reflect citizens’ demands for fairness, accountability, and credible outcomes.

The coalition urged the government and lawmakers to revisit contentious areas of the law and consult widely with stakeholders. They insisted that improving the electoral framework is essential to protecting democracy and ensuring that votes truly count.
