Professor Pat Utomi has criticised the recent amendment to the Electoral Act passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, describing it as a “gangster style assault on the popular will.” He warned that the action could seriously undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
In a post shared on X, Utomi said the joint actions of the Senate and the Executive reflect treason and a lack of character, cautioning that the amendment could trigger instability in Lagos and Abuja. He drew parallels with the ongoing crisis in Khartoum, Sudan.
He stressed that the development must not be ignored, urging citizens and stakeholders to resist measures that undermine the electoral process and the voice of the people. Utomi warned that failure to act could lead to violent unrest and political turmoil.
The Electoral Act amendment continues to generate mixed reactions from political actors, civil society groups, and the public, highlighting deep concerns over Nigeria’s democratic future.
