Human rights lawyer Chidi Odinkalu has criticised former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, saying he should accept his present legal troubles rather than complain. He argued that anyone accused of wrongdoing must face due process, stressing that no public figure should be above the law. His remarks came during a television interview where he reflected on accountability and justice.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission confirmed that El-Rufai is currently in its custody. Reports say he was first detained by the Department of State Services shortly after being granted bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, before being transferred. Authorities have not yet released full details of the allegations.
Speaking on Channels Television, Odinkalu accused the former governor of ruling with impunity while in office. He cited past controversies in Kaduna State, including claims of harsh treatment of critics, land disputes, and unresolved cases involving victims such as Rafael Galadima. He said leaders who once wielded power must also be ready to answer questions about their record.
He also pointed out that El-Rufai strongly supported Bola Tinubu during the 2023 election campaign, even appearing with him at Chatham House. According to Odinkalu, it is ironic for a key ally of the current administration to now claim unfair treatment. He concluded that justice should apply equally, regardless of political ties.
