Borno pays N2.5bn annual fees for students at Isaac Balami University

The government of Borno State has paid ₦2.5 billion to cover the annual tuition of scholarship beneficiaries admitted into an aviation institution. Governor Babagana Umara Zulum presented the cheque during a ceremony in Maiduguri, praising the initiative as a major investment in education and human capital. He urged the selected students to stay disciplined and focused.

Officials said only vulnerable candidates were chosen, with two students picked from each local government area. More than 3,000 applicants reportedly applied, 1,200 sat for exams, and 54 emerged successful. Each beneficiary also received ₦500,000 for resumption costs. Authorities described the process as transparent and merit-driven.

The school’s founder, Isaac Balami, applauded the state for fulfilling its pledge and pledged quality training for the scholars. He added that he personally funded scholarships for another 54 students to train as aircraft technicians. He said the goal is to produce skilled professionals for Nigeria’s aviation future.

Balami explained that his support was inspired by a scholarship he once received as a student. State officials say the partnership reflects their commitment to long-term development through education. The programme is expected to boost technical skills and employment opportunities. Leaders also believe it will strengthen the state’s reputation for educational support.
