Supreme Court responsible for confusion in Nigeria today – INEC’s ex-Commissioner, Igini

Former Mike Igini has blamed the Supreme Court of Nigeria for what he described as confusion in the country’s electoral system. Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television, he traced the issue to past rulings affecting election reforms.

Igini said earlier lawmakers were cautious about technology and even banned electronic voting machines under Section 52 of the Electoral Act. He explained that reforms were later introduced to close loopholes that previously allowed manipulation during voter accreditation.

He noted that devices like the smart card reader were created to verify voters, but the court ruled they could not override manual accreditation because they were not written into the law. He argued that this decision weakened efforts to modernize elections and improve credibility.

Igini also criticized the court’s position on INEC’s iReV portal, which it said only serves as a viewing platform without legal weight. According to him, such rulings have fueled ongoing disputes over election technology and contributed to uncertainty in Nigeria’s electoral process.
