Former Mike Igini, who once served with the Independent National Electoral Commission, has warned that the proposed Electoral Act amendment could put polling officials at risk during the 2027 elections. He shared this concern while speaking on Arise Television.
Igini explained that the bill might bring back a system similar to the old incident form, especially when officials claim there is no network for electronic result transmission. He said such claims could spark tension if voters can see network signals on their phones.
According to him, this situation could expose presiding officers—many of whom are members of the National Youth Service Corps—to anger from voters who suspect manipulation. He noted that these young officials often face the biggest risks on election day.
He also recalled past elections where some officials allegedly colluded to compromise result sheets, raising questions about how authorities would verify genuine results if duplicates appear online. Igini stressed that any law that creates doubt in the process could threaten both credibility and safety.
