List of senators who opposed manual backup clause in electoral bill released

The identities of 15 senators who rejected the manual backup option in the Electoral Act amendment have been made public. The lawmakers supported compulsory real-time electronic transmission of election results during voting in the Senate.

During plenary, the chamber approved electronic transmission but still retained manual collation as a fallback. The decision came after a tense session where senators were divided over how election results should be handled.

In the final vote, 55 lawmakers supported keeping the manual backup clause, while a group led by Enyinnaya Abaribe opposed it. They argued that only full electronic transmission would guarantee transparency and boost public confidence in elections.

Those who stood against the clause include Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Aminu Tambuwal, Seriake Dickson, Ireti Kingibe, Victor Umeh and others from different parties. The split highlights ongoing disagreements about electoral reforms ahead of future polls.
