Severe flooding has hit 27 states across Nigeria, with over 227,000 people affected and 33,000 homes damaged. The floods have also destroyed 16,488 hectares of farmland, causing significant disruption.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is actively responding to the crisis. They are focusing on public awareness campaigns and workshops about waste management to help prevent blockages in drainages and waterways, which can worsen flooding.

NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, has urged communities in flood-prone areas to move to higher ground to stay safe. The agency is collaborating with State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and community leaders to prepare for rapid flood response and ensure timely aid to affected individuals.

NEMA is already deploying relief items and working on improving flood management strategies. The floods highlight the challenges posed by climate change and inadequate infrastructure, but NEMA’s efforts aim to provide relief and prevent future disasters through better infrastructure and public education.
