The military alliance NATO could launch strikes deep inside Russia if Moscow attempts to invade Baltic nations, according to Estonia’s foreign minister. He rejected claims that the region could be quickly overrun, insisting that Baltic states are prepared to defend themselves and retaliate forcefully against any aggression.
The minister said Estonia and its neighbours, Latvia and Lithuania, have strengthened military readiness in response to growing concerns about possible actions by Vladimir Putin. Defence spending across the region has risen significantly, with some countries investing up to five percent of their national income in security and defence capabilities.
Recent military simulations and analyses have suggested Russia could attempt a limited territorial move in the Baltics. One scenario reportedly showed a rapid advance into Lithuanian territory while allies struggled to react quickly. The exercise also imagined hesitation from the United States in activating NATO’s collective defence clause and difficulty from Germany in stopping the advance, sparking debate among analysts about preparedness.
Despite such projections, Estonian officials insist they would not wait for a delayed international response before acting. They stressed that their strategy focuses on preventing any occupation in the first place and ensuring that deterrence remains strong. According to the minister, the message is clear: any attempt to attack the Baltic region would be met with immediate resistance and serious consequences.
