Lagos govt to reinstate compulsory monthly sanitation exercise from March

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to bring back its compulsory monthly environmental sanitation exercise starting from March 2025. The exercise will hold on the last Saturday of every month, as it did in the past. The update was shared by Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, during an inspection of regeneration projects on Lagos Island.

Wahab explained that the sanitation programme, previously observed between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., was suspended in November 2016 due to challenges in enforcing movement restrictions across the busy city. He noted that legal concerns at the time focused mainly on restricting movement rather than the sanitation activity itself. According to him, those issues have now been resolved after consultations with the Ministry of Justice and the State Executive Council.

The commissioner also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Lagos Island regeneration and deflooding projects. He said drainage improvements and public space upgrades are already reducing flooding in some areas. During the inspection, officials visited the Oja-Oba underbridge, which is set for redevelopment through a public-private partnership arrangement aimed at improving the environment and boosting urban renewal.

Wahab urged residents to develop a stronger culture of cleanliness, stressing that sanitation should not depend solely on government enforcement. He warned that tougher actions would be taken against illegal waste dumping, especially in markets along major roads. According to him, maintaining a clean environment is essential for public health and sustainable living in a fast-growing city like Lagos.
