The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general election, Peter Obi, has declared that votes must count in the 2027 elections. Obi warned that Nigerians would not accept any manipulation of results, stressing that the integrity of the electoral process must be protected. His comment, “If they don’t count it, we count the person,” has since sparked widespread political debate.
Speaking at a public event, Obi said democracy can only survive when citizens are confident that their votes truly matter. He urged electoral authorities and political actors to ensure transparency and fairness, adding that Nigerians are becoming more aware and determined to defend their mandate. According to him, credible elections are the foundation of national stability.
Obi also called on supporters to remain peaceful but vigilant. He emphasized the need for lawful participation in the democratic process while encouraging greater civic engagement ahead of 2027. Political observers say his remarks reflect growing conversations around electoral reforms and accountability in Nigeria.
As the next general election approaches, discussions about free and fair polls are already gaining momentum. Obi’s statement has added fresh energy to the debate, with many awaiting how political parties and electoral bodies will respond in the build-up to 2027.
