Members of the Nigerian House of Representatives are scheduled to hold an emergency plenary on Tuesday to discuss the 2027 general election timetable recently announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The session follows concerns over the timing of the elections, with the presidential and National Assembly polls set for February 20, 2027, and governorship and state assembly elections on March 6, 2027.
The planned dates coincide with major religious fasting periods for both Muslims and Christians, with Ramadan expected from February 8 to March 10, 2027, and the Christian Lenten season from February 10 to March 27, ending on Easter Sunday, March 28. Analysts have warned that the overlap could impact voter turnout and participation across the country.
The emergency plenary, as confirmed by House spokesperson Akin Rotimi, will allow lawmakers to examine the constitutional, legislative, and national implications of the announced timetable. Rotimi noted that the House aims to respond promptly to matters with significant consequences for Nigeria’s democratic process.
The session is expected to focus on legislative options and any steps needed to ensure a smooth electoral process. The House reiterated its commitment to responsible lawmaking, emphasizing the importance of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and safeguarding citizens’ right to participate fully in the elections.
