2027: INEC reacts as Atiku, others kick against general election dates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to concerns raised over the scheduled dates for the 2027 general elections. The commission recently announced that presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections are set for March 6, 2027. Party primaries are expected to take place between May 22 and June 20, 2026.

However, some Nigerians, including former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, have expressed worries that the February 20 date may fall within the Ramadan fasting period. Atiku urged the commission to reconsider, noting that Ramadan is a sacred time for Muslims and could affect voter turnout and election logistics.

Responding through its National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna, INEC explained that the dates were fixed in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and its established regulations. The guidelines provide that presidential and National Assembly elections are to be held on the third Saturday of February in an election year, with governorship polls following two weeks later.

While defending its decision, INEC acknowledged the concerns raised by stakeholders. The commission said it is consulting widely and may consider legal adjustments if necessary, provided they align with constitutional provisions. INEC also reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a transparent, inclusive, and credible 2027 general election.
