FG Intensifies Ebola Surveillance at Airports, Seaports, Land Borders

The Federal Government has stepped up health surveillance and screening measures at airports, seaports and land borders nationwide following renewed concerns over an Ebola outbreak in parts of East and Central Africa.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare announced that enhanced screening protocols have been activated across the country to prevent the importation of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus currently circulating in some African countries.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Assistant Director of Press and Public Relations, Ado Bako, the ministry said Nigeria has not recorded any confirmed case of Ebola but noted that heightened preparedness measures have been put in place to protect public health and strengthen the country’s response capacity.

The ministry disclosed that travellers identified as high-risk or exhibiting symptoms associated with Ebola and other viral haemorrhagic fevers will be subjected to secondary screening, isolation and referral procedures. It added that mandatory temperature checks, health declaration forms, travel history assessments and enhanced risk profiling have been introduced at designated points of entry.

According to the ministry, disease surveillance systems have also been strengthened nationwide through intensified monitoring, community-based surveillance networks and active tracking of public health alerts. Public Health Emergency Operations Centres have been activated, while Rapid Response Teams remain on standby at both national and state levels to respond swiftly to any potential threat.
