Tension is growing in Isiophumini Ishieke, Mbeke Autonomous Community in Ebonyi Local Government Area, as residents protest the alleged demolition of homes and market stalls. The community has petitioned Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and other authorities over actions reportedly linked to Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi. The dispute centres on the proposed remodelling of the Nwori Isiophumini Ishieke Market.
In a statement signed by community leaders, residents accused the senator of intimidation and issuing directives for families to vacate their ancestral homes ahead of demolition. They alleged that some houses and shops have already been pulled down without proper notice, compensation, or adherence to due process. Copies of the petition were reportedly sent to key federal and state officials, including security agencies and the National Human Rights Commission.
The community insisted it is not against development but wants the process to follow constitutional guidelines. They referenced property rights provisions in the 1999 Constitution and the Land Use Act, arguing that compulsory acquisition must involve lawful authority, public purpose, and prompt compensation. According to them, no transparent consultation or impact assessment has been conducted regarding the project.
Residents warned that the situation could escalate if not urgently addressed, stressing that forced displacement may worsen economic hardship and disrupt peace in the area. They called for an independent investigation, suspension of any further demolition, and dialogue between stakeholders to find a lawful and peaceful resolution.
