Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has warned that Nigeria could face a serious public uprising if alleged violations of human rights continue. He made this statement during a solidarity visit to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, following a confrontation involving security officials.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja after El-Rufai returned from Cairo, Egypt. Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were said to have seized his international passport and attempted to arrest him at the airport.
Speaking during the visit, Atiku expressed concern over the situation and said authorities should reflect on how members of the public reacted at the airport. According to him, ordinary Nigerians resisted what they believed was an unfair action, showing growing frustration among citizens.
Atiku stressed that continued disregard for people’s rights could lead to serious consequences. He described the airport incident as unnecessary and urged those in authority to respect the rule of law. His comments have since sparked conversations across the country about governance, civil liberties, and public reaction to security actions.
