A tragic road accident claimed the life of a man and left his wife critically injured after a granite-laden truck overturned and crushed their Toyota saloon car at Eleko Junction along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway in Lagos. The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday, February 12, 2026. Reports indicate that the truck suffered brake failure while approaching the junction from the Epe axis.
According to a statement by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the heavy-duty truck lost control due to the mechanical fault and rammed into the couple’s vehicle travelling inward Epe from Ajah. The impact caused the truck to topple onto the smaller car, trapping the driver inside the wreckage. Emergency responders from LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), with help from bystanders, worked together to rescue the victims. Sadly, the driver was confirmed dead at the scene, while his wife was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities revealed that the truck driver fled immediately after the crash, avoiding arrest. Police officers from the Akodo Division provided security at the scene to ensure order during the rescue and evacuation process. The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the grieving family and described the crash as preventable. He stressed the need for strict compliance with traffic rules, especially regarding vehicle maintenance and reckless driving.
In a separate incident the same day, a 33,000-litre fuel tanker caught fire around Ile-Zik inward Magboro on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway. Emergency teams from LASTMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service quickly responded and successfully put out the fire before it spread. Traffic was diverted to ensure safety, and the road was later reopened after the situation was brought under control.
