The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Yobe State has reported an increase in road fatalities in 2025, rising from 78 the previous year to 115. During a press briefing, Sector Commander Andrew Longkam also disclosed that traffic accidents involved 1,664 people, with injuries increasing from 867 to 926. Encouragingly, those rescued without injury rose slightly from 604 to 623.
Longkam attributed most crashes to over-speeding, tyre violations, dangerous driving, overloading, and route violations. He said that a total of 13,538 traffic offenders were arrested and sanctioned by FRSC operatives in 2025, reflecting intensified enforcement measures across the state.
To reduce road traffic crashes by 10 percent nationwide, in line with the FRSC’s 2026 Corporate Strategic Goal, Longkam revealed several planned interventions. These include expanded driver training, stricter enforcement of speed limiting devices, increased public awareness campaigns, and stronger collaboration with emergency services and the state Ministry of Works.
The sector commander urged all road users to obey traffic regulations, drive responsibly, and play their part in promoting road safety. He emphasized that reducing accidents is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation from drivers, pedestrians, and relevant government agencies alike.
