Magistrates in Cross River State have commenced an indefinite strike after accusing the state government of failing to address their long-standing demands. The industrial action began on Monday, February 9, 2026, with magistrates withdrawing their services across courts and government offices in the state.
The Cross River chapter of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN) explained that the decision followed several unsuccessful attempts to engage the government. According to the association, repeated verbal discussions and written appeals yielded no positive response, leaving them with no option but to down tools.
In a statement released in Calabar, MAN said the strike would continue until all eight demands presented to the state government are fully addressed. The association disclosed that its most recent appeal was contained in a letter dated February 2, 2026, which was also ignored by the authorities.
The statement, jointly signed by MAN Chairman Godwin O. Onah and Secretary Solomon O. Abuo, directed all magistrates in the state to comply strictly with the strike order. They warned members to suspend all official duties, including court sittings, until further notice, stressing that unity is key to achieving their demands.
