There was widespread anger and fear in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital, after reports emerged that operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service allegedly shot and killed a car dealer. The incident, which happened in broad daylight, has heightened tension among residents and traders in the area.
The victim, identified as 45-year-old Tukur Alhaji Salihu, was reportedly shot multiple times while inside his vehicle along the Nagari College–Illela-Yari axis on February 7, 2026. He was rushed to the hospital after the shooting but sadly died later that night. His remains were buried in Argungu, his hometown, leaving behind two wives, seven children, and aged parents.
Reacting to the incident, the Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria (AMDON), Kebbi State chapter, condemned the killing and described it as a troubling example of alleged excessive use of force. The association said the incident has caused panic among its members and raised serious concerns about safety and respect for human life.
AMDON has called for a full investigation by the Nigeria Police, the Nigeria Customs Service, and other relevant authorities. The group also appealed to the Kebbi State Government, human rights bodies, and civil society organisations to ensure justice for the victim’s family. As of the time of reporting, the Nigeria Customs Service had yet to issue an official response.
