Nigeria Police return $23,000 to victim in international romance scam case

The Nigeria Police Force has returned $23,000 to a victim in the Cayman Islands after uncovering an international online romance scam linked to a Nigerian suspect. The police confirmed that the money was recovered during a coordinated investigation involving international law enforcement agencies.

According to the police, the operation was carried out by the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja, following an official request from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. The request asked for Nigeria’s assistance in investigating the activities of Achufusi Obioma Ikenna, who was allegedly involved in the cyber fraud scheme.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said intelligence-led and discreet investigations led to the arrest of the suspect and the successful recovery of the stolen funds. After completing all legal and administrative processes, the money was formally handed over through the British High Commission in Abuja for onward delivery to the victim overseas.

The police said the suspect will be charged to court once investigations are completed. The Nigeria Police Force described the recovery as proof of its commitment to tackling cybercrime, strengthening international cooperation, and ensuring that stolen funds are returned to victims. The Force reaffirmed its resolve to pursue fraudsters and dismantle cross-border criminal networks.
