Lagos Police react to allegations of extortion on Lagos-Calabar coastal road

The Lagos State Police Command has rejected reports circulating online that police officers are arresting and extorting dispatch riders on the Lagos–Calabar coastal road. The police described the claims as false and misleading, saying they do not reflect the activities or position of the Command.

The allegation followed a viral social media post which claimed that dispatch riders were being arrested, their motorcycles seized, and large sums of money — reportedly up to ₦200,000 — demanded for their release. The post also alleged that a police spokesperson questioned who authorised motorcycles to use the coastal road.

Responding to the report, the Lagos Police clarified that the statement quoted in the viral post did not come from the Police Public Relations Officer or any official of the Lagos State Police Command. According to the police, the person referenced in the post belongs to a different government agency under the Lagos State Government, which operates its own public relations unit separate from the police.

The Command warned that spreading unverified information could cause unnecessary fear and damage public confidence in law enforcement. It urged social media users and online platforms to confirm facts from official sources before publishing reports. The police reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of all road users across Lagos State.
