Kidnapped Kwara monarch regains freedom

The traditional ruler of Aafin Ile Ire, Oba Simeon Ibiyinka Olaonipekun, who was abducted by armed men last year, has regained his freedom. The monarch, who rules a community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, was released on Thursday morning, bringing relief to residents and well-wishers who had been anxiously awaiting his return.

Oba Olaonipekun was kidnapped alongside his son in late December 2025 when gunmen stormed the area. While his son was released earlier after a ransom of N20 million was reportedly paid, the monarch remained in captivity for several months, sparking widespread concern within and outside the community.

Sources revealed that the king’s release came after an additional N12 million was paid to the abductors. The ransom, according to reports, was raised through combined efforts by members of the community and private individuals who contributed to secure his freedom.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command had not officially commented on the development. However, the monarch’s release has renewed conversations about the growing challenge of kidnapping in the state and the urgent need for stronger security measures to protect traditional rulers and rural communities.
