The Emir of Yashikira, Alhaji Umoru Seriki, has expressed deep concern over the increasing violent attacks on communities in Kwara North Senatorial District. Speaking in a telephone interview on Wednesday, the traditional ruler described the situation as heartbreaking, following fresh attacks on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area.
According to the Emir, several towns across Kwara North, especially those close to forest areas and bordering Niger and Sokoto states, are under constant threat from armed bandits. He said Yashikira and nearby communities have suffered repeated attacks, leading to loss of lives and widespread destruction of property. The monarch lamented that residents are living in fear and confusion, unsure why they are being targeted.
Reports indicate that the latest attack occurred on Tuesday evening, with bandits killing many residents and setting houses on fire. Though official figures are yet to be confirmed, local sources claim that the death toll may have risen to about 40. Security operatives, including soldiers and forest guards, have since been deployed to the affected communities to restore calm and prevent further violence.
The Kwara State Government has condemned the attack, with Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq describing it as a desperate act by criminal groups facing pressure from security forces. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor assured residents that counterterrorism efforts are being strengthened and that the state remains committed to protecting lives and property.
