World Cancer Day: NOA urges early action awareness

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Osun State has urged residents to take cancer prevention and early detection more seriously. The State Director, Adebiyi Adefarasin Stephen, made the call in a statement released to mark World Cancer Day 2026, observed every year on February 4. He stressed that early action can save lives and reduce the growing burden of cancer in Nigeria.

According to Adebiyi, cancer remains a major public health challenge in the country, with many patients seeking medical help only when the disease has reached advanced stages. He explained that low awareness, stigma, myths, and limited access to screening services are key reasons for the high number of cancer-related deaths recorded nationwide.

He noted that early diagnosis greatly improves survival chances, adding that cancer is not a death sentence when detected on time and treated properly. Common cancers in Nigeria, such as breast, cervical, prostate, liver, and colorectal cancers, can be managed more effectively if identified early. He also highlighted warning signs like unusual lumps, persistent pain, unexplained weight loss, abnormal bleeding, and long-lasting coughs.

The NOA advised Nigerians to adopt healthier lifestyles by avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol intake, eating balanced diets, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight. Citizens were also encouraged to get vaccinated against Hepatitis B and HPV, protect themselves from excessive sun exposure, and go for routine screenings. The agency described cancer control as a shared responsibility and reaffirmed its commitment to public awareness and health education.
