Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick, has explained why Arsenal midfielder Eberechi Eze never featured for the Super Eagles despite strong interest from Nigeria. Eze, who was born in England to Nigerian parents, eventually chose to represent England and has since become a regular member of the Three Lions squad.
Nigeria made an early move in 2017 by inviting Eze to train with the Super Eagles ahead of a friendly match against Burkina Faso. However, the match was later called off, which meant Nigeria could not officially include him in the squad. This delay opened the door for England to continue monitoring the talented midfielder.
Pinnick said efforts to secure Eze’s commitment intensified before Nigeria’s 2022 World Cup qualifier against Ghana. He revealed that he held private meetings with the player and his family in London, during which Eze showed genuine interest in playing for Nigeria. According to Pinnick, all necessary steps were being taken before changes within the NFF leadership stalled the process.
Speaking on a podcast, Pinnick insisted that Eze has strong love for Nigeria and was close to choosing the Super Eagles. However, administrative disruptions and leadership transitions ended the talks. Eze later made his senior debut for England and has gone on to score three goals in 16 appearances for the national team.
