Yeni Kuti, media personality and daughter of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has cautioned modern-day artistes against comparing themselves with her late father. She said such comparisons miss the true meaning of legacy and fail to appreciate Fela’s lasting impact on music and culture.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV after the Kuti family received Fela’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards, Yeni noted that Fela’s relevance nearly three decades after his death speaks louder than any debate. She urged artistes to respect his contributions instead of trying to measure themselves against him.
According to her, comparing contemporary musicians with Fela is like comparing “chalk and cheese.” She stressed that the fact people still talk about Fela 29 years after his passing shows the depth of his influence. Yeni encouraged artistes to focus on their own journeys and compete with their peers, not legends who have already made history.
DAILY POST recalls that the comments followed recent controversy sparked by Wizkid, who claimed he is “bigger” than Fela while responding to criticism from Seun Kuti. Yeni concluded by urging Nigerians and artistes alike to honour their legends and allow them their rightful place in history.
