LASEMA records 173 deaths in 1,156 emergencies across Lagos in 2025

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reported that 173 lives were lost during 1,156 emergency incidents recorded across Lagos State in 2025. The data, released as part of the agency’s annual emergency response review, also showed a drop in the total number of emergencies compared to 2024, suggesting gradual improvements in safety and response coordination across the state.

According to the report, road traffic accidents remained the most common emergencies, accounting for 394 incidents. This was followed by tanker and truck-related crashes with 249 cases, while fire outbreaks recorded 204 incidents. Monthly figures revealed that February had the highest number of emergencies with 122 cases, closely followed by April with 121 and May with 119. These figures highlight periods when emergency response services were most stretched.

Geographically, Alimosho Local Government Area recorded the highest number of emergencies at 180 cases, making it the most affected area in 2025. Eti-Osa followed with 144 incidents, while Ikeja recorded 139 cases. During the year, LASEMA’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit rescued and treated 1,924 victims, including adults and children. However, the agency confirmed 173 fatalities, made up mostly of adult males, alongside women and two children.

Reacting to the report, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, assured Lagos residents that the agency is fully prepared for emergencies in 2026. Speaking at a staff retreat, he credited the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for strengthening LASEMA’s capacity. He stressed that beyond equipment, the agency’s strength lies in its dedicated workforce and urged residents to act responsibly, avoid risky behaviour, and prioritise safety to reduce preventable emergencies.
