Nigerian Army rescues kidnapped cleric, neutralises gunman in Enugu

Troops of the 82 Division Nigerian Army and Joint Task Force (Operation UDO KA) successfully rescued Rev. Johnson Anayo Onugwu, a Christian cleric abducted in Enugu State. The victim was kidnapped from his residence in Ezimo community, Udenu Local Government Area, but was rescued unharmed later the same day following a swift, intelligence-led operation.

The operation involved close collaboration between the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, including the Nigerian Police, ensuring a coordinated response to the abduction. During the encounter, one of the kidnappers was neutralised while the others fled the scene.

Security sources confirmed that there were no casualties among the troops during the rescue operation. Items recovered from the kidnappers included an AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and ammunition, which were taken into custody by security forces.

The successful rescue highlights the continued efforts of Nigerian security agencies to tackle kidnapping and ensure the safety of residents in Enugu State. Authorities urged the public to provide timely information to help prevent such crimes in the future.
