A husband and wife in Lagos, identified as Fred and Goodness, have been arrested by the police for allegedly faking their own kidnapping to extort ₦10 million from family members and close associates. The incident reportedly happened in early January and shocked relatives who believed the couple were in real danger.
Police sources revealed that the couple allegedly planned the fake abduction after efforts to raise money for the husband’s return to the United States failed. Investigators said the suspects contacted relatives and friends, claiming they had been kidnapped and urgently needed ransom for their release. Out of fear and concern, both families reportedly raised the ₦10 million within three days.
Further findings showed that the couple agreed on a school premises in the Cappa area of Mushin as the ransom drop-off point. Security operatives monitoring the area became suspicious when the woman arrived alone and the man showed up separately moments later. Their actions drew attention, and when they were searched after leaving together, the ransom money was allegedly found in their possession.
During interrogation, the woman reportedly confessed to encouraging the plan, while investigations confirmed that no kidnapping ever took place. The Lagos State Police Command later confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspects will be charged to court once investigations are completed. Authorities warned the public against engaging in fraudulent acts that exploit fear and family trust.
