AFCON 2025: CAF announces punishment for Hakimi, Thiaw, Senegal, Morocco

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced disciplinary measures following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, targeting players, coaches, and football federations from Senegal and Morocco. The punishments stem from violations including disrespect, improper conduct, and interference during and after the match.

Senegal’s coach, Pape Bouna Thiaw, was banned for five CAF matches and fined $100,000 for misconduct. Players Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr received two-match bans each for showing disrespect to the referee. Senegal’s football federation faced fines totaling $615,000, including penalties for fans’ behavior, player conduct, and multiple bookings during the final.

Moroccan players were also sanctioned. Defender Achraf Hakimi received a two-match ban, with one of the bans extending for a year. Midfielder Ismaël Saibari was banned for three matches and fined $100,000. Morocco’s federation was fined $315,000 for disruptions caused by stadium ball boys, players, staff, and fans, including interference with VAR reviews and laser use during the game.

CAF emphasized that the penalties reflect its commitment to maintaining fairness, discipline, and integrity in African football. The governing body stated that all affected parties are expected to comply fully with the sanctions ahead of future CAF competitions.
