Gwoza refugees return home from Cameroon

The Borno State Government has begun the process of bringing back refugees from Gwoza Local Government Area who fled to neighbouring Cameroon during the peak of the insurgency. The first group of returnees, numbering about 300 people, has arrived in Pulka after spending more than ten years in displacement.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Dauda Iliya. According to him, the return marks a major step in the state’s ongoing efforts to resettle displaced residents and rebuild communities affected by years of conflict and instability.

The statement recalled that Governor Babagana Umara Zulum had earlier assured the refugees of a safe and dignified return when he visited a Cameroonian refugee camp on December 8, 2025. During that visit, the governor promised that his administration would work closely with relevant partners to ensure proper reintegration and support for returning citizens.

The Borno State Government explained that the repatriation exercise will continue in phases, as security and logistics allow. It added that the programme is part of a broader plan to restore livelihoods, rebuild homes and help displaced persons return to normal life across different parts of the state.
