Court orders arrest of journalist, Fejiro Oliver, his sureties

Magistrate Edith Nkechi Anumadu of Court 3 in Asaba, Delta State, has issued a bench warrant against investigative journalist Fejiro Oliver. The order also includes the arrest of his sureties, despite his lawyers informing the court that their client could not appear due to credible threats to his life.

This is not the first time a bench warrant has been issued against Oliver. In December 2025, the magistrate of Court 2 in Asaba had similarly issued a warrant after the journalist raised concerns about his safety in court. Oliver has maintained that his absence is solely due to fears for his life.

Speaking to journalists after the court’s order, Oliver said, “This is not justice. This is persecution, and I’m not deterred or bothered. I have never run from court trials. I want to stand trial to confront them and expose the lies in open court, but it must first be safe.” He emphasized his commitment to face the legal process while ensuring his personal security.

Fejiro Oliver was previously arrested in September 2025 by police in Abuja and transferred to Delta State, where he was remanded in prison before being released on bail after meeting the conditions set by the court. Civil society groups had intervened, highlighting concerns over press freedom and journalists’ safety.
