Police arrest man over bomb threat messages to Lagos schools

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man, Kosiso Chukwem-Nenyem, over alleged bomb threat messages sent to two schools in the Ikeja Government Reserved Area (GRA). The arrest followed reports by school officials who received alarming WhatsApp messages claiming that explosive devices had been planted within their school premises, triggering fear among staff, students, and parents.

According to the police, the threats were reported around 4:00 p.m. on January 20, 2026, prompting an immediate security response. The Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, said operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), and other tactical teams were deployed to the schools. After a comprehensive search, no explosives were found, and the schools were declared safe for normal activities.

Further investigations traced the messages to Kosiso Chukwem-Nenyem, a resident of Okota, Lagos. Although the suspect claimed he lost his phone in November 2025, police findings showed that the SIM card linked to the threats remained active and continued to receive calls from family members. The SIM card was eventually recovered from him, contradicting his initial claim.

The police said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect acted alone with the intention of causing panic and public fear. He is expected to be charged to court after investigations are concluded. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command also announced the arrest of 21 suspects linked to a notorious one-chance robbery syndicate, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring public safety across the state.
