Lagos Mainland Chairman bans overnight stay at Oyingbo Market

The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Mr Jubril Emilagba, has placed a ban on overnight stays at Oyingbo Market due to rising security concerns. The directive was announced during a security meeting with market leaders and traders, as part of efforts to protect lives, goods and business activities within the market.

Emilagba explained that allowing people to sleep inside the market could expose the area to criminal activities and endanger traders. He made it clear that markets are meant for trading, not as living spaces, stressing that the decision was a preventive step to reduce crime and maintain order.

The council chairman added that the local government would work closely with security agencies and market executives to ensure the rule is strictly enforced. He also reassured traders of his administration’s readiness to continue engaging stakeholders to keep the market safe, organised and business-friendly.

During the meeting, traders were also encouraged to register for the National Identification Number (NIN) and the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) for proper identification and security planning. Reacting to the move, the Women Leader of Oyingbo Market, Mrs Basira Balogun, welcomed the ban and promised full cooperation from traders to ensure compliance.
