Impeachment saga: Rivers Assembly can’t tell us who to vote for — Annkio Briggs

Niger Delta rights activist, Annkio Briggs, has insisted that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly do not have the authority to decide who the people of the state should vote for. She said the ultimate power of choice belongs to the electorate, not lawmakers.

Briggs made the statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today while reacting to the ongoing impeachment controversy involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly. According to her, attempts by lawmakers to influence political outcomes undermine democratic principles and the will of the people.

She stressed that residents of Rivers State still support Governor Fubara and want him to remain in office, even beyond the end of his current tenure in 2027. Briggs argued that lawmakers often forget that their mandate comes from the people, who reserve the right to decide their political future through the ballot.

The activist also warned the Federal Government, President Bola Tinubu, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to tread carefully. She noted that since Governor Fubara has been received into the APC, the party must be cautious in handling the Rivers crisis ahead of upcoming elections, especially if it hopes to win the support of Rivers people and the wider Niger Delta region.
