Politicising abduction of 177 worshippers from Kaduna churches puts victims in danger  – Amb. Adamu

A security expert, Ambassador Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, has warned that turning the abduction of worshippers in Kaduna State into a political debate could put the victims in greater danger and delay their rescue. Speaking on the recent kidnapping of church members in Kajuru Local Government Area, Adamu said abduction in the state should be treated strictly as a security issue, not a political, ethnic, or religious matter.

According to him, the criminals behind such attacks are organised groups mainly motivated by ransom. He explained that they take advantage of weak security presence, poor surveillance, and intelligence gaps in rural communities. Adamu noted that when such incidents are politicised, attention shifts away from real security failures, making it harder for agencies to work together effectively and giving criminals an advantage.

He stressed that politicisation weakens public trust and disrupts rescue efforts, often leading to longer periods of captivity for victims. Adamu said Kaduna State urgently needs a professional, intelligence-driven security strategy that focuses on coordination among agencies and cutting off the ransom system that fuels kidnapping, rather than public blame and arguments.

The warning comes amid conflicting reports over the abduction of worshippers from churches in Kajuru. While initial figures were disputed, the Christian Association of Nigeria confirmed that 177 worshippers were taken, with some later escaping. Security agencies and the Kaduna State Government have since acknowledged the incident, deployed operatives to the area, and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of those still in captivity.
