The Chairman of a Local Government Area in Abia State has accused some politicians of planning to illegally obtain National Identification Numbers (NIN) and Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from villagers. He warned that such actions could undermine democracy and expose rural residents to exploitation.
According to the council chairman, the alleged plan is targeted mainly at vulnerable communities where people may not fully understand the consequences of handing over sensitive personal documents. He described the move as dangerous and unethical, stressing that NIN and PVCs are private documents meant to be held only by their rightful owners.
The chairman cautioned residents to be vigilant and reject any attempt by individuals or groups asking for their personal identification details under any pretext. He urged community leaders and traditional rulers to help educate villagers on the importance of protecting their voter cards and national identity numbers.
He also called on security agencies and electoral authorities to investigate the allegations and take preventive action. According to him, safeguarding the integrity of voters’ data is critical to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in Abia State and Nigeria at large.
