Osun guber poll will not degenerate into violence – INEC assures

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured residents of Osun State that the August 8, 2026 governorship election will be peaceful and orderly. The commission dismissed fears that the poll could turn violent, saying it has put strong measures in place to ensure a calm and credible election.

Speaking during INEC’s 2026 New Year prayer at the commission’s office in Osogbo, the Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Mutiu Agboke, urged people to stop spreading fear about possible unrest. He stressed that there would be no war in Osun and warned INEC staff against any form of misconduct that could undermine the election process.

Dr Agboke also revealed that the commission has strengthened its Continuous Voter Registration system to prevent double registration and other abuses. He encouraged staff to work within the law, remain professional, and avoid being used by politicians to disrupt the process. He added that discipline and integrity would be strictly enforced.

The REC further charged Electoral Officers across the state to closely supervise their teams and ensure proper logistics ahead of the poll. He said national attention would be on Osun after the Ekiti election and urged officials to protect their reputation by delivering a peaceful, transparent and successful governorship election.
