No evidence they have repented – Jake Epelle on planned release of bandits

Human rights activist and social commentator, Jake Epelle, has expressed strong concerns over reports that some detained bandits may soon be released by the authorities. He said there is no clear evidence that those involved in violent crimes have genuinely repented or abandoned criminal activities.

Epelle warned that releasing such individuals without proper verification and rehabilitation could further endanger innocent citizens, especially in communities that have suffered repeated attacks. He stressed that victims of violence deserve justice and protection, not policies that may expose them to renewed harm.

He also questioned the transparency of the process, asking how the government intends to confirm true repentance and ensure that those released will not return to crime. According to him, forgiveness must go hand in hand with accountability, restitution, and a clear commitment to peace.

The activist urged authorities to focus on strengthening security, supporting victims, and rebuilding affected communities instead of rushing into decisions that could undermine public trust and safety. He added that any peace process must be carefully planned and centered on justice, not political convenience.
