Transfer: ‘He’s rooted in Okrika’ – Brentford announces signing of Nigeria eligible star

Premier League side Brentford have officially announced the signing of teenage defender Kaye Furo on a five-and-a-half-year contract. The club revealed that although Furo was raised in Belgium, he was born in Okrika, Rivers State, Nigeria, making him eligible to play for either Nigeria or Belgium at international level.

The 18-year-old is the son of former Super Eagles defender Iyenemi Furo, who featured for Nigeria at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Brentford described the youngster as a player with strong roots in Nigeria but one who developed his football career in Europe, adding that they believe he has huge potential.

Furo is moving to England after spending nine years at Club Brugge, where he played for both the senior team and their youth side, Club NXT. During his time there, he made several first-team appearances and gained valuable experience across different age groups, which helped prepare him for the demands of Premier League football.

On the international stage, Furo has represented Belgium at youth levels from Under-15 to Under-21, with his most recent debut for the U21 side coming in September 2025. Brentford manager Keith Andrews expressed confidence in the youngster, saying he believes Furo will grow into a very important player for the club.
