Bauchi 2027: South’s political stronghold, poor grassroots support pose hurdles for Ali Pate

As the 2027 governorship race in Bauchi State draws closer, attention is turning to Professor Ali Pate, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, who is believed to be considering a run on the platform of the APC. Pate is a respected technocrat with national and international recognition, but Bauchi politics is shaped more by zoning, numbers, and local influence than by profile alone. Political watchers say this reality may make his journey difficult.

One major hurdle is zoning. Since 1999, Bauchi South has produced all elected governors and still controls the largest voting population in the state. Pate comes from Bauchi Central, a zone that has never produced a governor in the current democratic era. This history weakens his political base and makes it harder for him to convince party leaders and voters that power should shift to his zone.

Another challenge is grassroots connection. While Pate is known for policy and reform, some politicians believe he has not built a strong enough local political network over the years. Although he has recently invested more in party activities and supported federal projects in the state, analysts say long-term loyalty and ward-level support still matter most during party primaries and elections.

Despite these obstacles, Pate still has strengths. His experience in government, his role in health sector reforms, and his family’s reputation in Bauchi give him credibility. Supporters believe he represents a new style of leadership, while critics warn that Bauchi politics often resists technocrats. Whether he can turn his profile into votes will largely determine his fate in 2027.
