Advocacy group raises alarm over illegal mining in Ogun communities

An advocacy group has raised concern over the rising activities of illegal miners in several communities across Ogun State. The group said unlicensed mining is causing serious environmental damage, destroying farmlands, and exposing residents to health and safety risks. It warned that if urgent action is not taken, many rural communities could suffer long-term harm.

According to the group, illegal miners are operating without approval from the government and often ignore environmental rules. They dig deep pits, damage water sources, and abandon dangerous mining sites after removing valuable minerals. These abandoned sites have become death traps for children and livestock, especially during the rainy season.

The group also said local farmers are the worst affected, as large portions of farmland are being taken over or polluted by mining activities. This has reduced food production and worsened poverty in already vulnerable communities. Residents complain that despite several reports, enforcement remains weak and the activities continue openly.

The advocacy group called on the Ogun State Government, security agencies, and mining regulators to increase monitoring and enforce the law. It urged authorities to shut down illegal mining camps, prosecute offenders, and protect communities from further exploitation and environmental destruction.
