Former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has come out in defense of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf amid criticism from Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement. Kwankwaso had labeled Governor Yusuf’s recent defection to the APC as an act of “betrayal,” but Shekarau argued the governor is only following a precedent set by Kwankwaso himself.
Shekarau pointed out that Kwankwaso had previously moved from the PDP to the APC while holding office, taking his mandate with him. He said Governor Yusuf’s decision to join APC should therefore not be framed as offensive or a betrayal, as political realignments often reflect personal judgment and consultation with stakeholders.
The former governor also recalled the formation of the NNPP in Kano, explaining that disputes over power-sharing arrangements contributed to his and others’ eventual exit from the party. Shekarau noted that Governor Yusuf was initially tasked with handling party arrangements, but when the outcome did not reflect inclusivity, a committee recommended leaving the NNPP.
Shekarau emphasized that political decisions, including defection, are guided by circumstances and collective interests, and should not automatically be seen as acts of disloyalty. He urged critics to consider the political history and principles behind such moves before casting judgment.
