Germany’s Defence Minister has said that the question of Greenland and recent comments by former US President Donald Trump about annexing the territory can be discussed within NATO if the need arises. The minister explained that any matter affecting the security or sovereignty of a NATO partner is important to the alliance and should be handled through dialogue and established diplomatic channels.
She stressed that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that its status is protected under international law. According to her, no country should attempt to change borders or claim territories unilaterally, especially among allies. She added that NATO exists to promote cooperation, stability, and mutual respect between member states.
The German minister said that while political statements may attract attention, they should not be allowed to undermine trust between allies. She encouraged calm discussions, respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international agreements as the right way to manage sensitive geopolitical issues like Greenland.
She concluded by saying that Germany supports Denmark and the principle that all disputes among allies should be resolved peacefully. If the issue becomes serious or affects alliance unity, Germany is ready to support discussions within NATO to ensure stability in the region.
