Stop selective corruption war, don’t go after just oppositions – Youth council tells EFCC

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to maintain neutrality in prosecuting corruption cases. The council raised concern that opposition-led administrations, especially in Bauchi State and other Northern states, are being unfairly targeted by anti-corruption agencies.

Umar Lauya, NYCN’s National Vice President, warned that this perception of selective justice could increase political tension, destabilize governance, and distract officials from development efforts. He emphasized that the anti-corruption fight should be free from political bias and focused on serving the public interest.

Lauya also highlighted that using the EFCC as a political tool erodes public confidence, restricts democratic space, and weakens national unity. He stressed that corruption exists across all parties, and investigations must include public officials from every political affiliation, not just opposition figures.

The NYCN concluded that a fair, transparent, and rule-of-law-driven approach is essential for the credibility of Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaigns. Lauya added that selective justice undermines democracy, while equal scrutiny of all public office holders strengthens governance and national cohesion.
