Zelensky appoints spy chief, Kyrylo Budanov as new Chief of Staff

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the country’s military intelligence, as his new Chief of Staff. The announcement was made on Friday through the president’s official social media pages, where he shared photos from a meeting with Budanov in Kyiv. Zelensky said the move was necessary because Ukraine needs a stronger focus on security at this critical stage of the war.

Budanov, who is 39 years old, has led Ukraine’s military intelligence agency and is widely known for overseeing several key operations since Russia invaded the country. According to Zelensky, Budanov has the experience, discipline, and determination needed to handle the responsibilities of the new role and to deliver results that strengthen national security.

The new Chief of Staff has been instructed to review Ukraine’s defence plans and present updated strategic documents that reflect the country’s current security needs. Zelensky said this will help align military efforts, government planning, and diplomatic engagement as Ukraine continues to defend itself and seek support from its allies.

Budanov replaces Andriy Yermak, who stepped down late in November after anti-corruption authorities searched his residence during a wider investigation into alleged financial misconduct in the energy sector. Although Yermak was not officially charged, his resignation caused political tension. Zelensky said Budanov’s appointment is meant to stabilize leadership, strengthen institutions, and keep Ukraine focused on both security and reforms.
