Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has condemned the reported threats by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) against Christians, stressing that such actions do not reflect Islam or the beliefs of ordinary Muslims. He said attempts to force people to change their faith are wrong and should never be associated with religion.
Ahmad explained that Islam promotes peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity, noting that violence and intimidation are political and criminal tools used by extremist groups to spread fear. He urged Nigerians not to judge any faith by the actions of terrorists who distort religious teachings for their own agenda.
He also called on security agencies to intensify efforts against ISWAP and similar groups, saying their activities continue to cause pain, division and loss of trust among communities. According to him, defeating terrorism requires both strong security action and unity among citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity.
Ahmad appealed to religious and community leaders to keep promoting dialogue and tolerance, especially in areas affected by insecurity. He warned that allowing extremists to shape public perception could deepen divisions and play into the hands of those who benefit from chaos.
